Counselling

Counselling is a talking therapy aimed at understanding you and enabling you to develop the tools to help face life’s challenges. Although it is common to seek support from counselling at a time that you are experiencing issues, you may also find help from proactive counselling to better understand your relationships or understand certain issues before they arise.

A typical counselling appointment is around an hour long and will involve you discussing various topics with your therapist. Importantly, your therapist will not judge you or tell you what to do. Instead, they will help you to explore your thought processes and emotions in order to better understand them.

Jeff’s view is that no individual lives in total isolation and, therefore, his approach to counselling takes the perspective from your relationships (former, current, future, and with everyone - not just friends and family). This holistic approach provides an intimate insight into the impact you have on your relationships and how they can impact on you.

Importantly, counselling is not about apportioning blame. Its purpose is to make observations about the current situation, allowing each individual involved to validate their own experience and that of those around them, recognising that each are allowed to have a separate point of view and are not wrong.

Benefits

Common benefits of counselling can include a better understanding of your behaviours, why you make the decisions you make, and - in time - how you can change your behaviours if you choose to.

Counselling often develops an ability to discuss issues, problem solve and find common ground in a safe way.

For example, in couples counselling, the couple is invited to engage in an active dialogue between three equals (the couple and their therapist) to look at their range of differences and to build tools to enable them to fit together better. Not only does this change the dynamic for the couple, but often will have an impact on any children that are involved.

When couples are under stress, children can be profoundly affected too. Therapy can help to acknowledge this and enable you to find more positive ways to deal with issues that arise.

Some individuals may also benefit from undertaking this work alone, (or at least start the process by themselves) which will provide them with a space to explore issues without fear of judgement.
